Channels and mic

Input selector (USB A·B / DIGITAL / LINE / PHONO / RETURN / Bluetooth)Input selector

Chooses what plays on the channel: a computer over USB (A or B), a player via DIGITAL or LINE, a turntable via PHONO, an external effect via RETURN, or a phone over Bluetooth.

Player plugged into LINE on channel 2? Then set channel 2's selector to LINE.

Mentor tip: Half of all “no sound” problems are a selector in the wrong position.

TRIMInput level (gain)

Adjusts the level of the signal coming into the channel. The channel level meter shows the volume before the fader.

Before mixing, set TRIM so both tracks reach about the same height on the meters with the faders open.

Mentor tip: The fader and the master set the room volume; TRIM is only there to make tracks equal. Keep the meter out of the red.

Channel faderChannel fader

The vertical fader for the channel's output volume. Up is louder, down is quieter, following the selected CH FADER curve.

The main way to bring a new track into the room is to raise its fader smoothly over 8–16 bars.

Mentor tip: Mix with the faders, not TRIM: you set TRIM once, and the fader is your transition tool.

CROSSFADER ASSIGN (A, THRU, B)Crossfader assign

Decides which side of the crossfader the channel goes to: A (left), B (right) or THRU — bypassing the crossfader.

In club mixing, many DJs set THRU and mix with the channel faders only. For scratching and quick switches, channels are assigned to A and B.

Mentor tip: Channel silent with the fader up? Check it: it may be assigned to one side while the crossfader sits on the other.

CrossfaderCrossfader

The horizontal fader: blends the channels assigned to A and B, following the curve set with the CROSSFADER switch.

For sharp switches and scratching, use a sharp curve. For a smooth transition, use a gentle one.

Mentor tip: If you mix with the channel faders, keep the crossfader in the center or assign the channels to THRU.

CH FADER / CROSSFADER (curve)Fader curves

Two 3-position switches: how fast the volume rises as you move the channel fader and the crossfader (sharp, medium, smooth).

For long transitions, use a smooth curve. For scratching and cuts, use the sharpest crossfader curve.

Mentor tip: A fader that's suddenly loud “at the start of its travel” means a steep curve is set. Check before your set.

MIC / TALKOVERMic and talkover

MIC turns the mic on (hold it for “talk while holding” mode). TALKOVER automatically lowers the music when you speak.

For announcements: TALKOVER on, keep it short, and the music gets quieter by itself.

Mentor tip: Turn the mic off right after you speak — otherwise the room will hear everything you say in the booth.

LEVEL (1, 2) / EQ (HI, LOW) / MIC 1 PHANTOM ON/OFFMic level and tone

LEVEL 1 and 2 set the volume of two mics, EQ HI/LOW sets the tone (±12 dB). PHANTOM sends +48 V to MIC 1 for a condenser mic.

Start with LEVEL at minimum, speak into the mic and turn it up to the right volume. Cut the lows a little — your voice will be clearer.

Mentor tip: Turn phantom power on only for a condenser mic, and only with MIC switched off.

BLUETOOTH PAIRINGBluetooth connection

Pairs the mixer with a phone or computer over Bluetooth: hold for about 2 seconds until it flashes. The sound comes in on the channel whose selector is set to Bluetooth.

Handy for background music before and after a set, or for quickly checking a track from your phone.

Mentor tip: Bluetooth isn't for your set: the quality and latency are worse than from a player.

EQ

HI / MID / LOWChannel EQ

Three knobs: highs, mids, lows. Each one cuts frequencies by up to −26 dB or boosts them by up to +6 dB.

The key mixing move: cut the lows (LOW) on the incoming track, and at the right moment swap the basslines.

Mentor tip: Two kicks at full LOW at the same time mean mud and overload. In a mix, only one track has the bass.

EQ CURVEEQ mode (ISO / EQ)

Switches how the HI/MID/LOW knobs work: ISOLATOR takes a band almost to zero, EQ gives soft, classic correction.

The isolator suits techno and house — you can remove the bass completely. Soft EQ is for open format and more “musical” correction.

Mentor tip: At someone else's mixer, check the EQ CURVE mode before your set starts.

Effects

COLOR / CENTER LOCKColor FX knob

The Sound Color FX knob on each channel: in the center the effect is off; turned either way, the selected effect (for example, a filter) kicks in. CENTER LOCK holds the knob at center when you snap it back.

Choose FILTER and turn COLOR left (low-pass filter) or right (high-pass filter) for smooth exits and entries.

Mentor tip: Always return COLOR to center after an effect: a forgotten filter is a common beginner mistake.

SOUND COLOR FX (SPACE / DUB ECHO / SWEEP / NOISE / CRUSH / FILTER)Color FX select

Six buttons pick one effect for the COLOR knobs on all channels: SPACE (reverb), DUB ECHO, SWEEP, NOISE, CRUSH (bit crushing), FILTER.

Most DJs keep FILTER selected: it's handy for taking out or bringing back the highs and lows during a transition.

Mentor tip: Pressing the same button again turns the effect off.

PARAMETERColor FX parameter

Changes an extra setting of the selected effect: resonance for FILTER, feedback for SPACE and DUB ECHO, noise volume for NOISE.

First find the sound with the COLOR knob, then fine-tune the character with PARAMETER.

Mentor tip: High filter resonance sounds aggressive — use it briefly.

BEAT FX (selector)Beat FX select

A rotary selector picks one of 14 beat-synced effects: DELAY, ECHO, PING PONG, SPIRAL, HELIX, REVERB, FLANGER, PHASER, FILTER, TRIPLET FILTER, TRANS, ROLL, TRIPLET ROLL, MOBIUS.

Three are enough to start: ECHO on a track's exit, REVERB before a breakdown and ROLL to build up before a drop.

Mentor tip: An effect is a spice: if everyone noticed it, you overdid it.

CH SELECTBeat FX channel

Buttons choose where the effect goes: to a channel (1–4) or to the mic. The BEAT FX indicator on the channel shows the choice and flashes while the effect is on.

Put the effect on a specific channel, not on the master — that way you control which track “goes into the echo”.

Mentor tip: Glance at the channel indicator before turning it on: an effect on the master at a bad moment is heard by the whole room.

BEAT ◀ ▶Effect beat length

Picks the effect length in beats: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 2 and so on. The effect time is calculated from the BPM automatically.

ECHO at 1 or 3/4 beat is the classic way out of a track. The shorter the value, the denser and faster the effect.

Mentor tip: Not sure? Set 1 beat — it's hard to go wrong.

TIME / LEVEL/DEPTHEffect time and depth

TIME sets the effect time precisely in milliseconds. LEVEL/DEPTH is how much effect is in the sound; turned fully left, you hear only the original.

Turn the effect on with LEVEL/DEPTH at minimum and add it gradually — that way it comes in nicely.

Mentor tip: With DELAY, ECHO, PING PONG, SPIRAL and REVERB, the effect tail keeps sounding even after you pull down the channel fader — DJs use this on a track's exit.

ON/OFFBeat FX on/off

Turns the selected Beat FX on and off. The button flashes while the effect is on.

Turn the effect on at the start of a bar and off at the start of a new phrase.

Mentor tip: With QUANTIZE, the effect lands on the beat even if you press slightly off.

X-PADEffect touch strip

Touch it and the effect turns on; let go and it turns off. Slide your finger to change the effect's time or parameter.

Handy for short fills: touch it on the last bar of the phrase and let go right on the drop.

Mentor tip: Keep touches short and in rhythm — X-PAD likes confident fingers.

FX FREQUENCY (LOW, MID, HI)Effect frequency bands

Chooses which bands the Beat FX affects: lows, mids, highs. A lit button means that band is processed.

Turn off LOW and the echo only hits the highs and mids — the kick stays clean.

Mentor tip: Echo on the bass almost always sounds muddy — turn LOW off by default.

AUTO/TAP / TAPBPM detection for effects

AUTO: the mixer measures the BPM of the audio itself (70–180). TAP: you set the BPM manually by tapping the TAP button in rhythm.

If the BPM on the screen is flashing (not detected), switch to TAP and tap 4–8 times.

Mentor tip: With players on LINK and QUANTIZE on, the mixer takes the rhythm from the rekordbox grid — that's the most accurate option.

QUANTIZE/UTILITY (WAKE UP)Effect quantize and menu

Press to turn on QUANTIZE for Beat FX: the effect lands on the beat using the rekordbox grid. Hold to open the UTILITY menu (balance, talkover, MIDI and more).

Keep QUANTIZE on when you play with CDJs over LINK — effects will stay right in time.

Mentor tip: If QUANTIZE is grayed out on the screen, the mixer isn't getting the grid from the player: check the LINK cable and the track analysis.

MIC FX (ECHO / PITCH / MEGAPHONE) / MIC REVERBMic effects

Separate effects for the voice: ECHO, PITCH (changes the pitch), MEGAPHONE and reverb, each with its own PARAMETER knob.

A light reverb makes an MC's voice sound alive; ECHO on the last word is a dramatic lead-in to the drop.

Mentor tip: Important announcements (the bar is closing, taxis) go out without effects: people need to understand them.

MULTI I/O (INSERT SOURCE / SEND CH / SEND LEVEL / INSERT) + SEND / RETURNExternal effects

Connects an external effects processor (via SEND/RETURN on the back) or a phone with an FX app (USB port on top). INSERT replaces the channel's sound with the processed sound; RETURN sends the effect to a separate channel.

SEND CH picks the channel, SEND LEVEL sets how much sound goes to the effect, and INSERT turns it on.

Mentor tip: This is an advanced topic: master the built-in Beat FX first.

Headphones

CUE A / CUE BChannel cue in headphones

Sends the channel's sound to the headphones: CUE A to the PHONES A output, CUE B to PHONES B. That way two DJs can each listen on their own.

Press CUE on the next track's channel and beatmatch it in your headphones while the room hears the current one.

Mentor tip: Before you raise the fader, check in your headphones that the track is in time.

MIX / LEVEL / MONO SPLIT / PHONES A, BHeadphone sections A and B

Two identical sections. MIX is the balance between the cued channel and the master, LEVEL is the headphone volume, MONO SPLIT puts the channel in the left ear and the master in the right. PHONES A is on top, PHONES B is on the front panel.

For beginners, MONO SPLIT or MIX in the middle works well: you hear both your track and the room and can compare them.

Mentor tip: Start with LEVEL at minimum and turn it up — that's how you protect your ears.

Master and booth

MASTER LEVELMaster volume

The overall volume at the MASTER 1 and MASTER 2 outputs. The master meter shows the level; CLIP lights up when it overloads.

Keep the master so the meter stays in the yellow zone, and let the sound engineer set the room volume on their own gear.

Mentor tip: CLIP lit? Turn it down, not up. Overload ruins the sound and the speakers.

BOOTH LEVEL / BOOTH EQ (HI, LOW)DJ monitors (Booth)

The volume of the speakers in the DJ booth and their 2-band EQ (−12 to +6 dB).

Set the monitors to a comfortable level so you hear the mix, but no louder than the room. You can pull back the bass in the booth so it doesn't boom.

Mentor tip: A loud monitor quickly damages your hearing. If you have to shout to be heard, the monitor is too loud.

USB A / USB B / MIDI ON/OFF / MIDI START/STOPUSB ports and MIDI

USB A and USB B ports on top (each has Type-B and Type-C connectors) for computers — two DJs with laptops can connect. MIDI sends tempo and start/stop commands to software.

Changeover between DJs with laptops: the first on USB A, the second on USB B, and the handover happens with no gap.

Mentor tip: For sound from a Windows computer, you need the driver from the manufacturer's website.

Rear panel

LINE / PHONO / DIGITAL CH IN / MIC 1, MIC 2 / SIGNAL GNDRear panel inputs

LINE (RCA) is for players, PHONO (RCA) for turntables with an MM cartridge, DIGITAL CH IN is a digital input from a player, MIC 1 and MIC 2 are for mics, SIGNAL GND is the turntable ground.

Connect a CDJ to LINE or DIGITAL on its channel and a turntable to PHONO — and always connect the ground to SIGNAL GND.

Mentor tip: Never plug a player (line-level signal) into PHONO — it will be deafeningly loud and distorted.

MASTER 1 (XLR) / MASTER 2 (RCA) / BOOTH / REC OUT / DIGITAL MASTER OUTRear panel outputs

MASTER 1 (balanced XLR) and MASTER 2 (RCA) go to the room's sound system, BOOTH (jack) to the DJ monitors, REC OUT is for recording, DIGITAL MASTER OUT is a digital output.

In a club, the room sound almost always comes from MASTER 1 over XLR — the most reliable cable.

Mentor tip: If the monitors are silent but the room is playing, check the BOOTH LEVEL knob and the BOOTH cable.
